Paris, art and river light

An art-filled morning, a table worth lingering over and Paris unfolding from the water. Give the grand sights enough space to become part of a holiday.

Couples and independent travellers who enjoy museums but want a café afternoon and an evening together, rather than several timed tickets every day.

Five full-day ideas to adapt · arrival and departure are additional. Book each service separately.

Full day idea 1

Orsay, then a Left Bank evening

Make Musée d’Orsay the morning’s anchor. Choose the rooms that interest you before arriving, so the visit has a shape without becoming a race. Afterwards, stop for lunch and continue towards Saint-Germain-des-Prés, leaving the afternoon for browsing and a café. Return to your room before dinner if that makes the evening feel like an occasion. The museum currently flags renovation access changes: consult its visitor notice before reserving.

Musée d’Orsay · Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Full day idea 2

River islands and a sightseeing cruise

Reserve Sainte-Chapelle separately and leave room for its security procedures. After the stained glass, spend time around Île de la Cité and the river rather than adding another major museum. Have lunch before an independently booked Vedettes du Pont Neuf sightseeing departure. This is a sightseeing idea, not dinner, champagne or a private boat. Keep the evening meal ashore; if sailings are disrupted, enjoy an accessible public riverside route instead.

Sainte-Chapelle · Île de la Cité · Pont Neuf

Full day idea 3

Rodin, with room to look twice

Give the Musée Rodin and its sculpture garden their own day. The change between galleries and outdoor sculpture makes a different kind of cultural visit from Orsay. Pause over lunch afterwards and make the rest of the afternoon deliberately light: a neighbourhood walk, a book or a return to a favourite café. Review the garden’s current works notice and the museum’s visiting conditions; individual loans and access works can change what is available.

Musée Rodin · Rue de Varenne

Full day idea 4

The Louvre, then the Tuileries

Choose a small collection of rooms at the Louvre instead of trying to see the whole museum. A reserved entry is an anchor, not a promise that queues disappear, so keep the next part of the day untimed. Leave for lunch when you have seen enough, then use the Tuileries as a quieter outdoor counterpoint. This is the most demanding museum day in the idea; replace it with a garden afternoon if the group would prefer less indoor sightseeing.

Louvre · Jardin des Tuileries

Full day idea 5

Luxembourg Gardens and your own Paris

Begin with the paths, chairs and Medici Fountain in the Jardin du Luxembourg. Make this the day for a long breakfast, a gentle garden circuit and a separately chosen lunch, rather than the day you squeeze in unfinished sights. Spend the afternoon back in Saint-Germain or beside the river, following what has caught your attention during the trip. In poor weather, shorten the garden visit and choose a café or a museum whose opening and ticket availability you have checked.

The right base changes the day

Where to stay.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés

A useful base for this Left Bank emphasis and evenings near home. Our Hôtel d’Aubusson profile is an accommodation idea, not a checked room quote; compare room size, access, tax and cancellation terms.

Around Luxembourg

Choose this area if a garden-led morning appeals. Read the Hôtel Récamier profile, then check the exact address and your airport connection before deciding; atmospheric streets do not guarantee a quiet room.

Areas are editorial suggestions. No room rate or availability is promised; a general hotel search does not preselect your property or dates.

The little discoveries

Leave room for these.

A garden pause

The Luxembourg and Tuileries gardens offer an outdoor contrast to ticketed art. Observe their closing times and current access notices; cafés and individual activities cost extra.

The river from the bank

A public riverside walk gives a different view of bridges and the city without buying a cruise. Choose an open route that suits the weather and your mobility.

Start without a rush

The journey in.

From Charles de Gaulle, compare the RER B connection with your actual hotel address. From Orly, metro 14 and Orlyval are distinct options. Check an airport-valid fare and any engineering work before travelling.

Keep arrival evening free of prepaid museum or cruise slots. On departure day, leave time for checkout, luggage and the airport or station rather than adding a final timed attraction.

Choose each part with care
