Madeira · Vivienne’s Edit

Madeira, the wilder coast

Volcanic pools, forest air and villages beneath green ridges. This is an island journey with time to stop, rather than collect viewpoints.

Travellers who value scenery and quieter evenings, and are comfortable planning mountain-road journeys. Less suited to an entirely car-free stay or a holiday built around guaranteed swimming.

Five full-day ideas to adapt · arrival and departure are additional. Book each service separately.

Full day idea 1

São Vicente: begin with the valley

Start in São Vicente, taking the morning slowly between the village and its green mountain setting. Choose lunch before continuing towards the coast. In the afternoon, stop at public coastal viewpoints where access is permitted, letting the weather decide how far you go. Return to your north-coast base for dinner while there is still daylight to enjoy the drive. This first day establishes the island’s scale before the longer outings.

Porto Moniz, with time beside the pools

Spend the morning around Porto Moniz’s waterfront and volcanic formations. If the managed natural-pool complex is open and conditions are suitable, make a separately paid visit the centre of the afternoon after lunch. Otherwise stay with the shore-side views and the town. Resist adding a mountain circuit on the same day: allow time to sit, watch the water and return to your base without hurrying dinner.

Seixal and a black-sand shoreline

Give Seixal its own gentler day rather than using it only as a photo stop on the way elsewhere. Start with views of the beach and its steep green setting, then choose a leisurely lunch. Spend the afternoon on a short permitted coastal walk or in the village; enter the water only when current conditions and local advice support it. Finish near your base, with an indoor meal if Atlantic weather arrives.

Santana and the forest edge

Set out early enough for a relaxed journey east to Santana. Look at the traditional thatched houses, then pause for lunch before heading towards Ribeiro Frio if road and weather conditions permit. The forest setting and viewpoint can be the afternoon’s destination. A marked walk is an optional extra only after checking the exact route, permissions and conditions; no levada route is presumed open. Return before a long mountain drive becomes a night drive.

Machico: a softer eastern shore

Make the final full outing a different coast. Travel to Machico for a morning along the bay, with its contrasting sand and pebble beaches and mountain backdrop. Explore the town before lunch, then choose an easy afternoon by the water rather than adding the full Ponta de São Lourenço hike. Return to your base in good time, or arrange a final night in the east in advance if that better fits tomorrow’s airport journey.

The right base changes the day

Where to stay.

São Vicente

A valley base between north-coast outings. Check the exact address: accommodation inland may require a car even for dinner.

Porto Moniz

Good if evenings beside the volcanic shoreline are the priority. Santana and Machico become longer days; shorten the plan instead of adding more stops.

The little discoveries

Leave room for these.

Seixal’s landscape from the shore

The black sand and green cliffs are a discovery even without swimming. Parking, equipment and organised activities are separate.

Machico’s bay-front walk

Enjoy the public shore and the contrast between pebble and imported sand beaches; no boat trip is necessary.

Start without a rush

The journey in.

Arrive at FNC and arrange the onward journey to the exact north-coast address. The Funchal Aerobus is not a direct transfer to Porto Moniz or São Vicente.

Allow arrival day for the cross-island transfer and settling in. Check hire-car conditions or a specific driver quote separately; neither is included.

For departure, allow for mountain roads and weather. An independently arranged last night near Machico or Funchal may suit an early flight; it is an option, not an assumed booking.
