Madeira

Trade the long sandy beach for volcanic pools, palms and a coastline that keeps changing. Madeira is an island escape for people who like to get out and look around, then return to a good evening in town. Give Porto Moniz its own day and Funchal another: the pleasure is in the contrast, not the distance covered.

Ocean pools and a garden pause

Why put Madeira on your list?

  • Funchal combines a waterside setting with gardens and places to eat.
  • Porto Moniz offers a contrasting north-coast landscape around volcanic pools.
  • You can alternate a city day with a carefully chosen island outing.

Make room for a smaller garden

Near Funchal’s Lido area, Jardim da Ajuda brings palms and open green space into an easy city afternoon. It is an invitation to pause between bigger outings: notice the planting, find somewhere to sit and let a garden be enough. Pair it with a Funchal day; save Porto Moniz and the north coast for a separate journey.

Where to stay

Funchal · An urban base for restaurants, gardens and exploring the island.

Porto Moniz · A north-coast stay around the natural volcanic pools.

A little room for discovery

Three days to make your own

Use these as a starting point for part of your stay. Each visit and journey is something to arrange independently.

  1. Day 1

Start in Funchal with a waterfront wander and time in the town. Choose one garden visit rather than rushing between several.

  2. Day 2

Set aside a day for Porto Moniz. Make the north coast the destination itself; pool access and swimming depend on local conditions.

  3. Day 3

Keep the final day flexible: another Funchal neighbourhood, a garden you missed or a scenic outing suited to the weather.

Getting around

Distances on a map can conceal a winding journey. Check bus routes and return times, or arrange transport independently for your chosen outing. Walking in town and mountain walking require very different preparation.

Before you choose your dates

Pack for changes in conditions across the island. Before any trail walk, check the official trail status and access requirements; do not treat an editorial idea as confirmation that a route is open.
