Madeira, gardens and the sea

A garden above the bay, a fishing-town lunch and afternoons measured by the Atlantic. Let Funchal be your comfortable starting point.

Couples and garden lovers who enjoy a slower rhythm, local food and coastal walks. Funchal and its gardens include slopes and steps; choose transport and access to suit your mobility.

Five full-day ideas to adapt · arrival and departure are additional. Book each service separately.

Full day idea 1

Market colours and the old-town waterfront

Begin with Mercado dos Lavradores on a trading morning: look at the regional produce and tiled building before deciding what to buy. Continue through the old-town streets towards the sea, stopping for lunch rather than scheduling another attraction. Spend the afternoon around the waterfront and marina, then settle into a restaurant near your base. If your first full day is Sunday, swap the market visit with a later morning.

Monte: a whole morning inside a garden

Make Monte Palace the main occasion. Its planting, ponds and tile collections reward a slow circuit, with pauses instead of a race to the next garden. Arrange your uphill and return transport independently; the cable car is one option when operating. Take lunch near Monte or back in Funchal, then leave the afternoon for a café and a short city walk. Keep the evening free for a table you choose together.

Palheiro and a different view of the island

Head east of the city to Palheiro Gardens, where established trees and open lawns give a different feel from Monte. Allow the morning for the garden and check admission before setting out. Have lunch without adding a cross-island drive, then return to Funchal for the Municipal Garden and an unhurried browse. In the evening, choose a restaurant by the style of cooking you want, not simply its sea view.

Câmara de Lobos, close to the fishing boats

Travel to Câmara de Lobos in the morning and explore the bay on foot. Look for the colourful boats from the public waterfront, then choose lunch in the town. Give the afternoon to its streets and a manageable section of the promenade; check access before attempting a continuous coastal walk back towards Funchal. Return by pre-planned transport if that suits you better, leaving the evening near your accommodation.

A long Atlantic afternoon

Keep the last full day local. Walk part of Funchal’s western seafront promenade in the morning, choosing a turning point that makes the return comfortable. After lunch, consider the supervised Lido bathing complex if open and conditions suit; entry is separate and swimming is optional. A book and a sheltered café work equally well on a breezy day. Finish with dinner near your stay rather than a late island excursion.

The right base changes the day

Where to stay.

Central Funchal and the old town

Useful for restaurants and the first day’s walking. Check street noise, step-free access and the slope between the hotel and waterfront.

Lido / Estrada Monumental

A practical choice for promenade time and hotels with leisure facilities. The historic centre is a separate walk or bus journey; sea access is property-specific.

The little discoveries

Leave room for these.

Funchal’s public waterfront

Watch the bay from the promenade without booking an excursion. Swimming facilities, café stops and boat trips cost separately.

The fishing-town view

Câmara de Lobos’ public bay-front gives the boats and town a setting of their own; no tasting or tour is needed to enjoy the view.

Start without a rush

The journey in.

Fly to Madeira / Funchal (FNC), then compare the SIGA Aerobus stops with your actual accommodation. It serves Funchal and continues towards Praia Formosa; the airport also lists taxi options.

Use arrival day for check-in, a short local walk and dinner. These are five full days, not a promise that five calendar days including flights is enough.

Before departure, check the current airport service and leave room for the journey from your particular hotel. Do not schedule Monte or a distant outing before an early flight.
