Algarve · Vivienne’s Edit

Lagos, golden coves and long lunches

Sculpted headlands, a broad sweep of sand and evenings back in a proper town. Settle into the western Algarve instead of trying to see the whole coast at once.

Couples and independent travellers who want sea air and a town for dinner. Choose the broad-beach options if steep cove access or extensive walking would not suit the group.

Five full-day ideas to adapt · arrival and departure are additional. Book each service separately.

A little rhythm for your visit

Days with room to breathe.

Full day idea 1

Lagos, from old streets to the waterfront

Begin with the historic centre, noticing the stonework and small streets rather than starting with a long drive. Pause for lunch, then explore a manageable part of the waterfront and marina area. This helps you understand your base before the coastal days. Leave time in the afternoon to check transport and access for the beaches you want to visit. Dinner stays independent: choose somewhere near your accommodation so the first full day feels settled.

Ponta da Piedade from the land

Make the headland scenery the day’s focus, using the designated public paths and viewpoints that are open when you visit. Bring water and leave space for stops rather than planning a cliffside speed-walk. Have lunch after the outing and keep the afternoon light. A boat or kayak experience is an optional, separately checked product, dependent on the operator and sea conditions; this land-based day does not promise cave entry or access to every small cove.

Meia Praia and a wide-open afternoon

Choose a convenient access point on Meia Praia and enjoy a comfortable section of its broad sandy frontage. The aim is an easy coast day, not walking the full length simply because it is there. Pause for lunch or return to town, then decide whether to spend more time by the sea. Check flags and local instructions before swimming. A beach visit includes neither reserved loungers nor guaranteed lifeguard cover outside the operating season.

Dona Ana and Camilo, chosen carefully

Use this day for one of Lagos’s smaller cliff-framed beaches, after checking the current approach and whether the steps suit everyone. You do not need to descend into both coves to appreciate the setting. Keep to designated routes and never shelter directly beneath unstable cliffs. After an independently chosen lunch, return to town or a favourite open viewpoint. If access, crowds or sea conditions are unsuitable, swap to Meia Praia rather than forcing the original choice.

Praia da Luz, another coastal mood

Arrange the journey to Praia da Luz as a separate outing, then spend time around its beach and village frontage. Choose a short walk, a long lunch and a relaxed afternoon rather than attempting an unassessed coastal hike back to Lagos. Check the return bus, taxi or parking arrangements before settling in. If you prefer to remain nearer your base, Porto de Mós is an alternative beach day; choose one destination rather than rushing between them.

The right base changes the day

Where to stay.

Lagos old town or marina

Useful for independent dinners and a town-based holiday. Check noise, parking and the precise walk to transport; a marina address is not the same as direct beach access.

Meia Praia or Porto de Mós

Consider a beach-led base if that matters more than stepping out into the old town. Confirm the actual distance to the sand and how you will return from dinner without assuming a shuttle.

The little discoveries

Leave room for these.

Lagos streets and public waterfront

The town walk is an activity in itself. Museums, historic interiors, meals and organised tours have separate conditions and costs.

Public coastal viewpoints

Open, designated viewpoints offer a land-based look at the coast without a boat fare. Parking or transport can cost extra; closures and cliff warnings take precedence.

Start without a rush

The journey in.

Faro Airport lists regional coach options towards Lagos as well as the connection into Faro. Compare departure times with your flight, and check the final journey from the stop to your accommodation.

Do not put a prepaid sea excursion on arrival or departure day. Keep checkout and the return to Faro separate from the five full coastal days; a long region should not be treated as one resort.
