Portugal

Algarve

A morning beside the sea, salt still on your skin, and lunch that becomes the afternoon. The Algarve suits beach lovers who want a town to wander as well as a towel on the sand. Choose western coves around Lagos or look east towards Tavira and its island coast: two different ways to let the day unfold.

Coves, saltwater and long lunches

Why put Algarve on your list?

  • Golden-cliff coves in the west and a different coastal character in the east.
  • Lagos and Tavira offer distinct starting points, rather than one interchangeable resort strip.
  • A simple rhythm of sea air, town walks and Portuguese cooking.

Look east to the island coast

The Algarve changes character around Ria Formosa, where channels and salt marshes sit behind a chain of sandy islands. Tavira makes a different starting point from Lagos: explore the town, then consider an independently arranged crossing to Ilha de Tavira. Choose an eastern base if this is the holiday you want, rather than treating it as a quick detour from the western coves.

Where to stay

Lagos · Old-town evenings with the western coastline in reach.

Tavira · Traditional streets and a base for exploring the eastern Algarve.

A little room for discovery

Three days to make your own

Use these as a starting point for part of your stay. Each visit and journey is something to arrange independently.

  1. Day 1

Begin in Lagos: explore the old town, find a place for lunch and keep the afternoon close to your base.

  2. Day 2

Make a nearby beach the focus. Check access and sea conditions before choosing a swim or an independently arranged boat outing.

  3. Day 3

Change pace with a town day. Tavira suits a separate eastern-Algarve outing; allow for the journey rather than squeezing it between two beaches.

Getting around

Choose an eastern or western base before arranging arrival transport. Compare the actual bus or rail connection with the last part of the journey to your accommodation; a regional station does not necessarily put you beside the beach.

Before you choose your dates

For a beach-led trip, consider daylight and sea conditions as well as the forecast. Outside the busiest beach months, build more of your day around towns and meals.
