Full day idea 1

Gulbenkian, between art and the garden

Choose the Gulbenkian Museum or the CAM modern-art programme according to what is actually on display, then leave time for the garden and lunch. The museum’s reviewed notice flags gallery work and removal of some artworks from 12–23 October 2026; do not plan around a guaranteed painting. CAM and the garden provide alternatives subject to their own conditions. Spend the afternoon at a gentler pace rather than attempting both entire collections in one visit.

Estrela and a neighbourhood lunch

Start in Jardim da Estrela and take time around the paths, planting and bandstand. Choose a café or lunch nearby, keeping the middle of the day comfortably open. The afternoon can be another short garden circuit or a few surrounding streets rather than an automatic journey across Lisbon. This day is intentionally light: it gives you space between museum visits and can be shortened if mobility, weather or simply the desire to sit down suggests it.

Príncipe Real and the pleasure of browsing

Explore the gardens and streets of Príncipe Real, leaving time for the independent shops and a lunch that suits your own tastes. The neighbourhood’s mansions, restaurants and smaller details are the attraction; buying anything is optional. Continue towards the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint only if the walking and conditions suit you. In the afternoon, revisit a shop or settle into a café instead of adding an unrelated museum simply to fill the day.

Contemporary ideas on the Belém waterfront

Give Belém its own journey and make MAAT the optional cultural anchor, after checking the current exhibitions and ticket. Pair it with a comfortable section of the riverside and an independent lunch. This creates a contrast with the Gulbenkian day, without promising that every exhibition will suit every visitor. If the museum is closed on your chosen date, switch days or keep the outing to the waterfront and another venue you have checked separately.

Tapada das Necessidades, a slower finish

Choose Tapada das Necessidades for a garden-focused morning among its planting and ponds. Take a book or simply allow time to sit, following the current public paths and access notices. Plan lunch separately and use the afternoon for the part of Lisbon you most want to return to. This is not a promised event, concert or picnic service: the attraction is an unhurried green interval, with enough flexibility to replace it if the weather is unsuitable.

The right base changes the day

Where to stay.

Avenidas Novas near the Gulbenkian

A useful starting point if art and transport connections matter more than being beside the old-town lanes. Compare the exact metro access and evening dining options around each property.

Estrela or Príncipe Real

Choose for neighbourhood evenings and the garden days. Ask about slopes, stairs, luggage access and room noise; a charming address may still need a taxi approach.

Areas are editorial suggestions. No room rate or availability is promised; a general hotel search does not preselect your property or dates.

The little discoveries

Leave room for these.

Garden time between exhibitions

Gulbenkian Garden and Jardim da Estrela can be enjoyed separately from museum admission. Respect garden access notices and seasonal closing arrangements.

Príncipe Real and Tapada das Necessidades

Public garden and neighbourhood walks are the low-cost core of this idea. Food, shopping, guided activities and exhibition tickets are optional independent purchases.

Start without a rush

The journey in.

Use Lisbon Airport’s official metro and transport information to plan the connection to the actual street. Avenidas Novas and Estrela require different final approaches; do not assume the same route suits both.

Leave arrival and departure free of paid exhibition commitments. These five full-day ideas can be selected or reordered to fit a shorter break and the museums’ current calendars.
