Portugal

Porto

Follow Porto down to the Douro, stay for lunch, then discover how different the city can feel among the gardens of Serralves. This is a short break for lovers of river views, neighbourhood cafés and a little green space between cultural stops. Pick a few places to enjoy properly; the hills are reason enough to linger.

Douro views, garden afternoons

Why put Porto on your list?

  • Ribeira gives the trip a memorable riverside centre of gravity.
  • Cafés and cultural stops make an enjoyable counterpoint to the views.
  • A few days can have a clear shape without an overfilled schedule.

Give Serralves a day of its own

Serralves Park combines formal gardens, woodland and a traditional farm within its grounds. It offers a different rhythm from Porto’s steep streets and riverfront: paths and planting rather than another skyline to photograph. Plan the journey and current admission separately, then leave enough of the day to enjoy the park without rushing back to Ribeira.

Where to stay

Ribeira · Consider a stay near the historic waterfront.

Central Porto · A starting point for the city's streets, cafés and cultural visits.

A little room for discovery

Three days to make your own

Use these as a starting point for part of your stay. Each visit and journey is something to arrange independently.

  1. Day 1

Begin in central Porto. Take a neighbourhood walk, settle on a café and get a feel for the slopes before planning longer outings.

  2. Day 2

Give Ribeira and the Douro waterfront a leisurely day. Choose a lunch stop, then follow a manageable route back into the city.

  3. Day 3

Reserve time for one cultural visit of your choice. Keep the rest of the morning open and allow for the journey to your departure point.

Getting around

Consider hills and luggage access when choosing where to stay. Check the route from your arrival station or airport, including the final walk. Public transport can make more sense than repeating steep walks throughout the day.

Before you choose your dates

A riverside break need not depend on perfect sunshine. Pair your outdoor plans with an indoor visit, and choose footwear for uneven or wet streets.
